SPRING 2021 - SPECIALTY WRITING WORKSHOP

10 WEEK ONLINE COURSE STARTING MARCH 13

SATURDAYS from 1:00pm - 4:00pm ET

4 CREDITS

$500

Join Tony Award-winning Mark Hollmann (URINETOWN) to explore how to be your own best collaborator as a composer-lyricist.

Using students' prior work, as well as songwriting assignments during the 10-week course, we will examine:

•             The craft of marrying music and lyrics in a musical theatre song

•             Musical theatre song structure

•             Song-spotting in a musical theatre book

•             The art of rewriting

Students must be able to demonstrate their own work via Zoom, by recording themselves playing and singing it at the piano/keyboard, or using a recorded scratch demo, which will be downloaded into a dedicated Dropbox before each session.  We will also read and discuss Jack Viertel’s book The Secret Life of the American Musical for insight into the musical’s structure.  Students are required to have a copy of The Secret Life of the American Musical to use as a class text.
