Summary

Write the next Sister Aloysius, Troy Maxson, Willy Loman, or Blanche DuBois!

The goal of this class is to introduce participants to creative ways to think about character behavior and specific, unique dialogue.

Through in-class exercises, students will experiment with developing complex and active characters who push the story forward while speaking in dialogue that is rich with subtext. Students will also examine the work of accomplished playwrights who have brought memorable personalities to the stage, and use those examples to inspire their own work.

Requirements for this Class

Class participants should possess a willingness to write and rewrite their work (based upon notes given by the instructor), as well as a willingness to read the plays that will be assigned throughout the course.

Expectations for this Class

Full participation is expected; students will be required to share their work, to provide feedback on other student's’ work, and to respectfully listen to all class discussions/critiques.

After Completion of Class

By the end of the course, students should have begun writing a full length play; they should also have discovered a variety of new exercises and craft tools that they will be able to apply to their future writings.
